The president of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union says he suspects the latest contract extension being offered to public servants by the province is related to next year's election.

Warren (Smokey) Thomas described the offer of a 7.5 per cent raise over four years as "unprecedented" and says it includes a number of positive changes with no demands of concessions.

More than 35-thousand OP-SEU members work across the public sector, doing everything from administration and enforcement to social work and I-T.

Premier Kathleen Wynne disputes that the offer is about the upcoming election, saying now that the government has balanced its budget, workers are in line for some increases. (The Canadian Press)



Ontario's health minister says up to four more front-line workers will be hired in every public health unit in the province to help deal with the ongoing opioid drug crisis.

Eric Hoskins says the move will help communities improve addiction outreach and education, while working on early warning and surveillance of opioid overdoses.

The new hires are included in 15-million dollars of funding the province is earmarking to help tackle the opioid crisis.

Hoskins is meeting today with mayors from cities including Toronto, Ottawa, Thunder Bay and Hamilton to discuss the opioid crisis. (The Canadian Press)



The sweltering heat that's broiling most of southern Ontario is expected to start letting up by tomorrow.

Environment Canada meteorologist Peter Kimbell says a heat warning remains in effect today from Windsor through to Ottawa, except for some isolated areas around Kingston and the northeast shore of Lake Erie.

But he says a cold front is expected to start passing through in the next 24 hours, bringing cooler temperatures.

He says the heat warnings should be lifted by later in the day tomorrow. …
