(Ont-OPSEU-Deal)

The president of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union says he suspects the latest contract extension being offered to public servants by the province is related to next year's election.

Warren (Smokey) Thomas described the offer of a 7.5 per cent raise over four years as "unprecedented" and says it includes a number of positive changes with no demands of concessions.

More than 35-thousand OP-SEU members work across the public sector, doing everything from administration and enforcement to social work and I-T.

Premier Kathleen Wynne disputes that the offer is about the upcoming election, saying now that the government has balanced its budget, workers are in line for some increases. (The Canadian Press)

The new hires are included in 15-million dollars of funding the province is earmarking to help tackle the opioid crisis.

Hoskins is meeting today with mayors from cities including Toronto, Ottawa, Thunder Bay and Hamilton to discuss the opioid crisis. (The Canadian Press)
