Police Release Identity of Officer Wounded in Jerseyville Shootout

JERSEYVILLE * The police officer who was wounded in a shootout with a burglary suspect on Tuesday was recovering from multiple gunshot wounds, police said Wednesday.

The officer, identified Wednesday as Nathan Miller, 30, of the Jerseyville Police Department, was among a group of officers responding to a burglary alarm downtown at about 1 a.m. Tuesday. The alarm came from DJ's Pub and Grill, which was closed.

The officers encountered Austin Durham, 24, leaving the building, police said. After noticing the officers, Durham ran for several blocks. When Durham reached a point where he had to climb over a fence to continue fleeing, Miller caught up with him.

Police said Durham began shooting at Miller, who shot back after being struck by bullets.

Durham was shot four times, according to Jersey County Coroner Larry Alexander, and later pronounced dead at Jersey Community Hospital. …
