A PARADE can celebrate who we are, and what values we have as a city, and as citizens. Parades can also offer a way of constructing new identities, not necessarily defined by geography, but coming from a dialogue between artists and communities.

As well as drawing on our Northern traditions of procession - like Whit walks, trade union marches and radical protest - Manchester Day strives to embrace the city's diverse residents and visitors.

I think our Parade offers a model for new civic identity, and it's creating a new tradition. What began in 2009 is now one of the largest parades in the North West of England, and, crucially, it gives visibility to groups often under-represented in civic life - our LGBT communities; our ethnic minority groups; people with disabilities, or without jobs, or with caring responsibilities, and many others who feel economically or culturally excluded from the city centre. …
