Ko Wants to Keep Olive Branch Extended despite China's Diplomatic Aggression

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Panama's Beijing-orchestrated diplomatic sneak attack ending bilateral ties earlier this week has angered many Taiwanese.

Former Vice President Annette Lu is fuming at suggestions that outgoing Kuomintang Chairwoman Hung Hsiu-chu would still be participating in this year's KMT-CCP Forum despite the most recent nadir in cross-strait relations.

But Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je doesn't seem ready to give up on Beijing just yet.

Asked whether current circumstances following the fallout of Panama's shift would affect his planned participation in a cross-strait cities forum between Taipei and Shanghai, Ko said he wanted to leave the door open to goodwill.

"My stance has been to stay open to goodwill. But we have to see if there's sincerity from China," he said. …
