A Jerseyville police officer was shot and wounded and a burglary suspect was killed early Tuesday after the officer responded to a burglary alarm at a downtown bar, authorities said.

The shootout erupted about 1 a.m. after the officer went to check on the alarm at DJ's Pub and Grill, which was closed.

The man, later identified as Austin Durham, 24, fired multiple shots when the officer in the lead rounded a corner, Blackorby said. The Jerseyville officer exchanged fire with Durham and was shot multiple times. A deputy with the Jersey County sheriff's office also fired his weapon, Blackorby said.

Durham was shot four times, according to Jersey County Coroner Larry Alexander, and later pronounced dead. He was from Carrollton, in nearby Greene County, authorities said.

The injured officer was taken to St. Louis University Hospital and was in critical but stable condition, Blackorby said during a press briefing Tuesday morning. …
