U.S. Navy ship, cargo ship collide; 7 sailors missing

Seven Navy sailors were missing and at least three were injured after a U.S. destroyer collided Saturday morning with a merchant ship off the coast of Japan, the country's coast guard reported.

Rescuers were searching for the seven sailors who were thought to have been thrown into the sea or possibly trapped inside damaged sections of the destroyer, said Japanese coast guard spokesman Yoshihito Nakamura. None of the crew of the container ship was reported injured. Footage from the Japanese TV network NHK showed heavy damage to the mid-right side of the U.S. destroyer Fitzgerald.

The ship's captain, Cmdr. Bryce Benson, was airlifted to the U.S. Naval Hospital in Yokosuka and was in stable condition, the U.S. 7th Fleet said in a statement. Two other crew suffered cuts and bruises and were evacuated, it said.

Japan's coast guard said it received an emergency call from a Philippine-registered container ship ACX Crystal that it had collided with the Fitzgerald.

The Philippine ship is 29,060 tons and 730 feet long, the coast guard said. The Navy said the collision occurred 56 nautical miles southwest of Yokosuka, a city south of Tokyo .

Anger erupts over flaws at burned London tower * Grief turned to outrage Friday over a high-rise tower fire in London amid reports that materials used in the building's renovation could have fueled the inferno that left dozens dead and missing as it decimated the public housing block.

Engineering experts say outside insulation panels installed on the 24-story Grenfell Tower may have helped the fire spread rapidly from one floor to the next. The Guardian newspaper reported Friday that contractors installed a cheaper, less flame-resistant type of paneling during the renovation that ended in May 2016.

Tensions were high Friday, two days after the overnight fire gutted the huge housing block, killing at least 30 people and leaving dozens missing and hundreds homeless.
