ELIAQUIM Mangala is closing in on a move to Lyon after arriving in the French city yesterday.

The City defender has been pictured outside the Ligue 1 club's training ground, and it is hoped that a deal, worth up to £18m, will be tied up in the next 24 hours.

Mangala still has two years left on his City contract, but he was loaned out to Valencia after a poor couple of seasons for the Blues, following a £42m move from Porto in 2015, and after John Stones was brought in to provide competition for Nicolas Otamendi, Aleks Kolarov and Vincent Kompany.

With his confidence at a low ebb, a season on loan at Valencia helped him rebuild his career, and the La Liga club wanted to keep him. He had expressed some hope that he could stay at City and learn from Pep Guardiola, saying he learned more in a month under the Catalan than he did in two years with Manuel Pellegrini. …
