In the June 7 letter "Anti-Gun Assertions," Matthew Burk says that American citizens not involved with gangs or the drug trade have the same chance of being shot as in most Western European nations. That is patently false. The total number of homicides in the Netherlands (17 million inhabitants) during 2014 was 137; of these, 35 were committed with a gun. Criminals were responsible for 22 gun deaths, so that there were 13 murders of ordinary citizens by gun. That is equivalent to one per 1.3 million inhabitants.

If that were the case in the U.S., the number of law-abiding U.S. citizens killed by guns would be about 255. In 2015, the total number of gun deaths in the U.S. was more than 13,000 (excluding more than 21,000 suicides). Does anybody really believe that 98 percent of these were committed by gangs or drug criminals? …
