FERGUSON * A new center offering meals and educational, recreational and health programs for older adults might have to make some cutbacks in the next federal fiscal year.

The nonprofit Mid-East Area Agency on Aging, which officially opened its Ferguson Senior Resource Center in a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday, operates on a combination of donations and government funding. Almost half of that funding comes from the Department of Health and Human Services.

The White House's 2018 budget request proposes a 16 percent cut to the department, but the executive director of the nonprofit, Mary Schaefer, said she's been told to prepare for about an 18 percent cut.

Schaefer said the reduction in funding would mean the new senior center would need to trim some services. Specifically, the center's Meals on Wheels program would likely stop offering hot meals and serve only frozen meals. …
