Duff Reveals He Wanted to Join United Ahead of His £17M Move

DAMIEN Duff has admitted he wanted to join United a year before his £17m move to Chelsea.

Former Blackburn winger Duff became Chelsea's record signing mere months after Roman Abramovich completed his 2003 takeover, and he went on to win two Premier League titles under Jose Mourinho.

However, the Republic of Ireland international was a boyhood United supporter who angled for an Old Trafford move after excelling at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea.

The move never materialised and Sir Alex Ferguson did not think Duff was worth the fee Chelsea paid Rovers 12 months later.

"I met [Alex Ferguson] a long time ago," Duff, pictured, said.

"I was just a nervous wreck, they were my club.

"Obviously before I was at Chelsea I was at Blackburn and I wanted to go there, but it didn't materialise.

"Back then I think my fee was £15m and I ended up going for £17m - it's a lot of money and it didn't quite happen. …
