Family facing deportation gets reprieve

MOOSOMIN, Sask. - A family that had been facing deportation to Honduras next month is celebrating along with much of the southeastern Saskatchewan community of Moosomin after learning they'll get to stay in Canada after all.

The Santos family came to Canada seven years ago after witnessing a murder in the Central American country.

Family members had said their own lives would be in jeopardy should they be sent back as planned on July 5.

Moosomin residents have stood behind the family and organized a fundraising lunch for Thursday, but it was interrupted by news the federal government had come through with a reprieve.

Yvonne Slugoski, a Moosomin resident who was helping the family, said they got a message from Canada Border Services Agency that "the removal that was previously scheduled for July 5th has been cancelled. …
