Scouting report * The Cardinals begin a three-game series against the Diamondbacks on Tuesday. The Diamondbacks, locked in a tight race with the Dodgers and Rockies in the National League West, are 21 games over .500. The Cardinals are five games below .500, yet are only four and a half games out of the NL Central lead.

The Diamondbacks have won 15 of their last 18 games and boast an impressive balance of hitting and pitching.

The Diamondbacks entered Monday having scored the fourth-most runs in the NL this season with 400. That is 78 more than the Cardinals had scored. Their offense has been led by powerful first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, who is hitting .405 in June with a .709 slugging average. Goldschmidt has also added six home runs.

Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks' pitching staff has the second-lowest ERA and has allowed the second-fewest runs in the big leagues. …
