The National Farmers Union says it is proudly endorsing a call to action by the Idle No More movement as part of its Unsettling Canada campaign.

The N-F-U says Canada's 150th birthday is the right time to address the historical and ongoing dispossession of indigenous peoples.

The N-F-U says it backs Idle No More's demands for full implementation of the calls for action laid out by both the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

The farmers' union says that means swift action to resolve land claim disputes and violations of indigenous treaty rights, and reining in industries that threaten the well-being of indigenous peoples in their territories. (The Canadian Press)



Forage producers across the prairies are being advised to keep a lookout for any problems with alfalfa weevils.

Forage specialist Lorne Klein says he's been hearing reports of significant weevil populations starting to show up, especially in the pure alfalfa stands.

He says yields will be significantly lowered on some fields if they aren't harvested or sprayed with insecticide within a couple of weeks.

Alfalfa weevils can reduce the quality and hay yield by half. The main method of control is to hay the crop early or if numbers warrant, to use an insecticide. (CHSM)



A massive fire has destroyed the main office and store of Eyking Farms, resulting in substantial damage to their hydroponic greenhouses.

It took firefighters about eight hours to put out the blaze.

The Nova Scotia business is carrying on operations, serving customers throughout the Atlantic provinces and the Caribbean.
