Calgary man gets life for two killings

CALGARY - A Calgary man has been sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 23 years in the deaths of his estranged wife and her friend.

Hari Pal attacked and killed Sanjula Devi, who was 36, and Fahmida Velji-Visram, who was 29, when Devi returned to the family home to get some of her belongings in May 2014.

Court was told that Velji-Visram ran out of the home screaming that she'd been stabbed, then collapsed and died in hospital a short time later.

A third woman, Shalni Gill, who lived upstairs, was also injured in the attack.

The 55-year-old Pal was ordered to serve his two sentences for second-degree murder consecutively.

His sentence for the aggravated assault of Gill was to be served concurrently. …
