Scouting report * After taking two of three from the Diamondbacks, things don't get much easier for the Cardinals as they come home for three games against the Washington Nationals.

The Nationals have had a stranglehold on the National League East virtually the entire season and are 15 games above .500. Their offense is the primary reason why.

The Nationals lead the National League in batting average, home runs and runs scored. Their offense is led by perennial MVP candidate Bryce Harper, who has posted a slash line of .319/.422/.589 and hit 18 home runs before Thursday. Infielders Daniel Murphy and Ryan Zimmerman ranked second and third in the NL in batting average, hitting .339 and .338 respectively.

The Nats also have a strong starting staff anchored by 2016 Cy Young winner Max Scherzer (Parkway Central, Mizzou). …
