The Obamacare mandate - the requirement that everyone has to buy health insurance - is one of the law's most unpopular features. "Why should the government force people to buy insurance they don't need?" the limited-government argument insists.

Why, indeed. The truest answer is, because you never know when you will need it. We pay in, year after year, so that when we do need high-quality health care our insurance will make it affordable, or at least affordable enough. A friend, newly diagnosed with breast cancer, didn't know she would need to use her insurance coverage for cancer treatment until two weeks ago. Ditto when my father-in-law had a heart attack and my teenage daughter required emergency surgery.
