There was some unexpected drama in an Alberta courtroom today before the jury retired to begin deliberations at the trial of Derek Saretzky.

The jury in Lethbridge had requested all 14 members be allowed to decide the fate of Saretzky, who is charged with three counts of first-degree murder.

But the judge said Canadian law doesn't allow more than 12 to decide the verdict -- and one of two jurors who were dismissed yelled that it's not right to treat people this way after forcing them to serve on trials.

Saretzky is charged in the 2015 deaths of Terry Blanchette, Blanchette's two-year-old daughter Hailey Dunbar-Blanchette and 69-year-old Hanne Meketech (HAN'-uh MEK'-uh-tek). (The Canadian Press)



A Saskatchewan man convicted in the death of his ex-wife has been sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 22 years.

Thirty-two-year-old Steven Lee Lewis was charged with first-degree murder, but pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in Melfort Court of Queen's Bench.

He was charged last February after the R-C-M-P received reports that a woman had been shot at a home in Hudson Bay, about 300 kilometres east of Saskatoon.

Twenty-seven-year old Stacey Lewis was pronounced dead at the scene. (CJWW)



The second person to enter the Manitoba N-D-P leadership race is promising fast action to implement a 15-dollar minimum wage.

Former cabinet minister Steve Ashton says he'd raise the wage from the current 11-dollars an hour to 15-dollars in the first year of an N-D-P mandate.

M-L-A and indigenous rights activist Wab Kinew -- the only other candidate in the race so far -- is also promising a 15-dollar minimum wage but only by the end of his first mandate.

Ashton lost his seat in the 2016 election and is making a third run at the N-D-P leadership after losing efforts in 2009 and 2015. …
