Pharmaceutical Marketing Has Standards and Brings Value

I take exception to the June 27 letter "Nothing New," whose author described the actions of pharmaceutical representatives as "haunting the office daily" and "hawking their snake oil" when she worked in a doctor's office at one time. She says Big Pharma's mentality hasn't changed. I have remained silent much too long, as critics of the pharmaceutical industry continue to bash a profession that has contributed greatly to the high quality of health care we are accustomed to in this country.

As an individual who has served in the pharmaceutical industry for 27 years as a sales representative, I am extremely proud of my profession and the positive impact I have had on both health care practitioners and patients.

I do agree that some of the sales/marketing strategies that were implemented and still may exist could be construed as "quid pro quo."

Over the past decade, the industry has adopted standards of behavior and marketing guidelines to address these issues. …
