Illinois Man Charged in Disappearance of Chinese Scholar

A Champaign, Ill., man who is a physics grad student was charged Friday with kidnapping a visiting scholar from China who was studying at the University of Illinois.

Investigators believe the missing woman, Yingying Zhang, 26, has been killed, said officials with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of Illinois. She was last seen getting into a car about 2 p.m. June 9.

Brendt Christensen, 27, was charged with kidnapping her.

The affidavit filed in support of the charge alleges that Christensen was driving a Saturn Astra that was seen on security camera video stopping next to Zhang at a corner near the University of Illinois, a release from the U.S. attorney says. Zhang is seen getting into the car before it pulls away.

The affidavit also says that while Christensen was under law enforcement surveillance on Thursday, agents overheard him explaining that he kidnapped Zhang. …
