The United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania, one of the largest charities in the area, has seen a drop in contributions from Allegheny County for the first time since the Great Recession. Financial woes in the steel industry were partly to blame, but other factors, including a corporate gift that failed to come through, also played a role in the shortfall.

Contributions from Allegheny County totaled $31.7 million for the fund-raising cycle that ended last month, down from $31.9 million during the previous campaign period. Because of robust giving in Westmoreland and Fayette counties and part of Armstrong County, however, overall regional giving was up 5 percent - to $36.4 million - during the just-completed cycle.

The decrease in contributions from Allegheny County was disappointing but not alarming. …
