WHILE Piccadilly Gardens was the main focus for the launch of this year's Manchester International Festival, this weekend the festival's public event will take the city into the woods.

ToGather is a major art and dance exhibition that will culminate on Sunday with a large scale performance in Whitworth Park which is free to attend and families are encouraged to head along. There will be food and drink stalls, and the chance to watch a world premiere work by acclaimed artist Susan Hefuna.

Egyptian artist Susan has been working with 30 residents of Manchester, from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds, to discuss how they have made Manchester their home.

She has developed the free public performance with dancers from the renowned Studio Wayne McGregor to put the feelings of those 30 people into a dance form.

Her sketches of those movements are on display inside The Whitworth gallery, with her exhibition taking the form of a "mental map".

It also includes a series of palmwood structures, inspired by boxes seen on the streets of Susan's native Cairo, which will be transported into the park for the ToGather public event on Sunday, July 9, from 1pm to 5pm. …
