Regarding "3 Chicago Officers Indicted" (June 28 National Briefs): The indictments of Chicago officers for attempting to cover up misconduct in the killing of Laquan McDonald point to the urgent need for transparency and accountability in police departments across the country. These indictments, while correct, come three years too late and can do little to restore justice to Laquan McDonald's family and community. And for every high-profile case like this, there are countless others forgotten by everyone except the families and communities affected. In Pittsburgh, we still don't have justice for Bruce Kelley Jr., who was shot and killed by Port Authority police in Wilkinsburg in January 2016.

We should be pushing law enforcement officials to establish strong accountability measures proactively, rather than needing to do "damage control" after the fact. …
