It wouldn't feel like summer without an Andy Warhol book on the horizon. Two new books on Pittsburgh's most celebrated expatriate are vying for a spot on every Warhol-lover's bookshelf -one scholarly, the other inward-looking and gossipy.

The first is "3D Warhol: Andy Warhol and Sculpture" by Thomas Morgan Evans (I.B. Tauris, $15.99 paperback, $99 hardback).As the book's title suggests, Mr. Evans explores Warhol's engagement with his audience via his non 2D oeuvre -cloud pillows, time capsules, holograms, supermarket product boxes, etc. Mr. Evans keeps the analysis fairly accessible, but he occasionally lapses into jargon-filled critics speak.

Still, it's clear he has mastered Warhol's world and is just the guide we need to understand what this most misunderstood of artists was all about beyond the paintings of soup cans. …
