Joe's St. Louis: Pat McGonigle to Head West, Stay Awake Later for KC News

Article excerpt

ANCHOR STEAM * Fans of Pat McGonigle will be happy to know the departing KSDK (Channel 5) anchor will be back on the air next week. Bad news, it's across the state in Kansas City.

On Monday, McGonigle will become a co-anchor on the 10 p.m. newscast at WDAF (Channel 4), a Fox affiliate in Kansas City. He will co-anchor with Loren Halifax and also pick up reporting duties.

McGonigle will in part replace Phil Witt, the 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. co-anchor who recently retired after 38 years on the air.

"They say when one door closes, another opens. And that's pretty much what happened here," McGonigle said in a telephone interview, adding that one substantial change will be his bedtime.

"I worked six years of mornings here and six years in New York before that, getting up at 2 a.m.," he said. "Now, I'll probably be getting to bed when I used to wake up."

McGonigle, a St. Louis University and Emerson College grad, worked in Maine, Nebraska, Michigan and New York before coming to STL in September 2011 to replace Art Holliday and join Jennifer Blome as the co-anchor of KSDK's morning show.

But telltale signs about his role at the station surfaced nine months ago when the station bumped former sports director Rene Knott up to being a third co-anchor on the morning show, with McGonigle and Alexandra Corey.

The move cut into the exposure for McGonigle, who began anchoring only in the 4 a.m. to 5 a.m. block when Knott joined the team.

On the KSDK morning show, general manager Alicia Elsner said Knott and Corey would be the only anchors for now. She did not, however, rule out the possibility of adding a third anchor to the newscast.

DON'T CALL IT A COMEBACK * Sometimes, the wild card is an ace.
