Manchester. utd in the 1980s THE end of the 1970s saw Manchester United lose 3-2 to Arsenal in one of the most memorable FA Cup finals ever.

The Reds scored two goals in the final minutes to equalise, only for Arsenal's Alan Sunderland to net again in extra time.

The 1979-80 season saw United finish closely behind Liverpool in the title race, but they could only finish eighth the following season.

Manager Dave Sexton was duly replaced by West Bromwich Albion boss Ron Atkinson.

Atkinson broke the transfer record at the time by signing Bryan Robson for £1.5 m. United went on to win the FA Cup twice under Big Ron.

After drawing 2-2 against Brighton and Hove Albion (1983), United hit top form in the replay a few days later notching up a 4-0 win.

Robson scored two goals in the first half, followed by a header from Norman Whiteside, who at the age of 18 became the youngest player to score in an FA Cup final. …
