Irish War Cry won the $750,000 Wood Memorial by 3 lengths at Aqueduct Race Course in New York on Saturday, bouncing back from a poor performance in his previous start and perhaps turning in the most impressive performance of the day in the three major Kentucky Derby prep races.

Ridden by Rajiv Maragh, Irish War Cry ran 1 1/8 miles in 1:50.91 to earn 100 points on the Derby leaderboard with the victory and qualify for the race, on May 6 at Churchill Downs in Louisville. The colt paid $9 to win for trainer Graham Motion.

It was a nice rebound for Irish War Cry, who faded to seventh in the Fountain of Youth race after dominating the Holy Bull.

Battalion Runner, co-favorite at 2-1 with Cloud Computing, finished second to gain 40 points. Cloud Computing earned 20 points for being third. The points system determines the 20-horse starting field for the Kentucky Derby.


Irap won the race at Keeneland, in Lexington, Ky., by three-quarters of a length in a 31-1 upset. Everything in Irap's record suggested him being an afterthought behind unbeaten favorite McCraken. Of his previous seven starts, he had three seconds, three fourths and a third.

"We had the perfect trip," jockey Julien Leparoux said. "And it came to reality."

Irap ($64.60) was in contention from the start in the seven-horse field, and held his ground throughout before taking charge to cover 1 1/8 miles in 1:50. …
