The union representing faculty at Ontario's 24 community colleges has asked the Ministry of Labour to appoint a conciliator in its contract negotiations with the College Employer Council.

J-P Hornick of OP-SEU says the union was left with no choice after management's bargaining team would not discuss proposals that addressed the members' top concerns.

Either side can start the clock ticking towards a legal strike or lockout deadline if conciliation fails.

OP-SEU says it wants to improve academic quality while addressing fairness for faculty, including those it says are caught in precarious part-time and contract positions.

The collective agreement for the 12-thousand workers expires on September 30th. (CJOJ)



The province says a trucking company and a farmer have been fined for the unlicensed disposal of dead animals following a large barn fire early this year in Plympton-Wyoming, near Sarnia.

The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs says Ernie Herrington Excavating, Trucking and Sanitation and Mike Huybers pleaded guilty to one charge each under the Food Safety and Quality Act.

Each was fined 25-hundred dollars, including victim fine surcharges.

The ministry says the incident followed a fire in late January that killed about four-thousand pigs.

It says a total of 11 dump truck loads of dead stock were transported to landfill from Huybers' farm without the required licence being obtained. (



Halton Region police say they have arrested a suspect in a shooting incident in a Burlington motel parking lot.

Investigators said that two people in a vehicle were fired at yesterday in the city near Hamilton.

No injuries were reported in the incident, and police say it's believed the shooting was targeted.

They say a suspect was taken into custody yesterday in Hamilton but released no other details. …
