(BC-Mountie-Death-Sentencing)

Grieving relatives of a Mountie killed by a drunk driver wept as they handed a letter to Crown counsel expressing their outrage over the case, which ended with a four-year prison sentence.

Provincial court Judge Ronald Lamperson said he realized many people were upset by the "tragic case" of Constable Sarah Beckett, who was killed in a Victoria suburb in April of 2016.

But he said he must be guided by previous decisions on impaired driving causing death in sentencing 29-year-old Kenneth Fenton.

Beckett -- a 32-year-old mother of two boys -- was back at work following maternity leave when Fenton sped through a red light in his truck and slammed into her cruiser. (The Canadian Press)

(BC-Wildfires)

Wildfire officials fear deteriorating weather conditions could mean a rough weekend for crews fighting about 170 fires in southern B-C.

Kevin Skrepnek of the B-C Wildfire Service says tomorrow's forecast calls for sustained winds between 20 and 40 kilometres an hour across the Cariboo region and the southern Interior.

Gusts could reach 70 kilometres an hour in some areas, and Skrepnek says that could bring some aggressive and challenging conditions.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau meanwhile announced the creation of a new ad hoc cabinet committee to co-ordinate Ottawa's response to the fires -- including recovery and rebuilding efforts. (The Canadian Press)

(BC-Wildfires-Crime)

Experts say wildfires and evacuations seem to be bringing out some undesirable elements in B-C's central and southern Interior.

R-C-M-P say they have arrested a half-dozen people accused of exploiting the disaster by looting homes left vacant after residents were ordered to leave.

Quesnel Mayor Bob Simpson says he's had reports of "fake fire marshals" knocking on doors and telling people their street is under an evacuation alert. …
