Slashing Funds for Amtrak Would Be a Terrible Mistake

President Donald Trump's proposed budget cuts for 2018 are cruel, but the proposal to cut Amtrak service in 23 states is especially so. Though Pennsylvania won't lose its train service in the Northeast corridor, cutting us off from the Western half of the country would decrease the quality of life in America.

This is not an exaggeration. Last year 31.3 million people traveled on Amtrak. The 15 long-distance routes carried 4.6 million passengers.

When the proposed transportation budget comes up for a vote, I urge our senators to oppose it.

Some people choose Amtrak as a less stressful, more relaxed mode of transportation. For others, it's a necessity - health issues can preclude flying. The cost and stress of flying or driving can deter travelers.
