Smoldering Pit Sends Smoke Plume over Clairton

Clairton Mayor Richard Lattanzi has signed an emergency order allowing the city to hire a cleanup specialist to deal with a stubborn mulch fire that has been smoldering since Thursday.

State and local health officials are monitoring the air quality as residents of Worthington Avenue have complained about the smoke and the smell.

Clairton Fire Chief Joe Lazur said the property owner, who was using the site as part of a worm farm fertilizer business for about five years, has been cited for improper disposal of waste.

He said efforts to extinguish the fire have been unsuccessful and removing the compost pile might be the only solution.

"We thought we had it under control," Chief Lazur said Monday after the fire department had poured water into the ravine for about four hours. …
