George Romero Showed That Making Movies Here Is Possible

In 2005, Quentin Tarantino flew to Pittsburgh for Steeltown's Pittsburgh premiere of"Land of the Dead" and called George Romero the "father of America's independent film movement." In April of this year, George Romero came back to Pittsburgh to accept the Elly's Pioneer Award and thank Pittsburgh and Pittsburghers for giving him so much. George was presented his award by "Walking Dead" executive producer Greg Nicotero,who got his start on "Day of the Dead" and expressed his gratitude for all George had done to help the careers of so many.

You cannot go on a film or TV set filming in Pittsburgh today without meeting crew who have a connection to a Romero film.

Earlier, legendary special effects artist Tom Savini, who collaborated with George for years, gave an Elly award to Steve Tolin, who has a special effects company in PointBreeze and was also inspired by George. …
