ROMELU Lukaku insists he had to move to United - despite Chelsea's determination to bring him back to Stamford Bridge.

Jose Mourinho tainted his former club when winning the race for the Belgian striker - claiming he'd chosen to move to the 'biggest club.' That was seen as a swipe at Premier League champions Chelsea, who had tracked Lukaku for months.

Antonio Conte tabled a late bid in the hope the 24-year-old would reject United in favour of the club he supported as a child - but Lukaku said he had to test himself at English football's most successful club.

"I'm glad I'm here because you really see it's a big club and that was the challenge I wanted," he said after scoring his first goal since his £75m move from Everton - firing the winner against Real Salt Lake on Monday.
