Refugees arriving on Italian shores are getting rancid chicken instead of a helping hand. An Italian mob family in the south - responsible for most of the cocaine flowing through Europe - has been siphoning money intended for aid to refugees, 83,000 of whom have passed through Italy this year alone.

Pittsburgh is no stranger to the mob's burly racket. Eugene "Nick the Blade" Gesuale, who died in 2016, was the inspiration for the infamous "Pittsburgh connection" in the film "Goodfellas." From Prohibition through to gambling in the 1980s, the mob crawled through the seediest parts of Pittsburgh life.

Yet while Pittsburgh's mafioso presence has dwindled in the second millennium, gangsters still shove oiled fingers into almost every part of the Italian economy. …
