Romero Wants His Pal De Gea to Say Even If He Is Still No.1

SERGIO Romero wants David de Gea to stay at United because it will help him 'to be better'.

Jose Mourinho is increasingly confident of hanging onto the Spaniard despite yet another summer of intense speculation about a move by the goalkeeper to Real Madrid.

Fresh from signing a new fouryear deal, Romero has made no secret of his desire to become the club's No.1 after starting 18 games last season. But the Argentine hopes his friend does not leave as he looks to keep improving - even at 30 years of age.

"Since I came to this team, I said I need to compete with David because in that way we can keep the competition level high," he told ESPN . "I don't want him to leave. We are friends. And if he stays here, it will help me to be better."

Despite being signed by Louis van Gaal, who he worked with previously at AZ Alkmaar, Romero only made seven starts in his first season at Old Trafford.

The Argentine has been one of a handful of players to have improved under Mourinho and only sat out three games in United's march to Europa League glory in May. …
