At 100, a Nun Prays for People She Has Known

Over the past century, Sister Elizabeth Zagar has influenced thousands of people, some at schools in Pittsburgh and Puerto Rico and others at an adult living center and hospital in Lawrenceville. She hasn't forgotten them.

"I always include people I have met in my lifetime in my daily prayers," says Sister Elizabeth, who prays throughout the day and attends Mass daily.

On June 28, she celebrated her 100th birthday at the Sisters of St. Francis' Mt. Alvernia convent in Millvale. The oldest of eight children, she grew up in Aliquippa and attended St. Joseph's Church.

Her cousin, Sister Mary Alma Fernacz, nudged her to join the order of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities 74 years ago, she said. In the 1960s, she earned bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Duquesne University. …
