Columnist Brian O'Neill is right to address Pittsburgh's air quality in light of last week's Code Orange alert due to poor air quality in the region ("Don't Hold Your Breath for Better Air in Pittsburgh," July 20). As Mr. O'Neill points out, "horrific air" is a greater risk to those who suffer from asthma or other lung ailments - my own child and grandson are asthmatics - but this is a problem that affects countless more in the region, especially children and the elderly.

To those who say that the air in southwestern Pennsylvania is much cleaner now than it was 30 or 40 years ago, I say it is nowhere near clean enough. Well enough is not good enough. There is still much work to be done.

Case in point: Methane emissions from natural gas operations combine with other pollutants such as benzene, a known carcinogen, to contribute to ground-level smog that hurts those suffering from asthma and lung and heart diseases. …
