Hillman grant of $1 million to help single mothers

The Women and Girls Foundation has received $1 million from the Henry L. Hillman Foundation to launch an initiative aimed at helping disadvantaged single mothers gain access to transportation, child care and other support they need in order to work or go to school. The new program, called Femisphere, will be directed by Rochelle Jackson, who formerly was an advocate and organizer for the Welfare Justice Project at Just Harvest, a nonprofit that works to curb hunger in Allegheny County.

Former PG staffer new Pittsburgh Magazine editor

Longtime newspaper journalist Brian Hyslop has been named editor of Pittsburgh Magazine. Mr. Hyslop, 56, will begin his position Aug. 6. He is a former business editor of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and also worked as an editor in the features department and held other positions at the Post-Gazette and The Pittsburgh Press. After leaving the Post-Gazette in 2015, he helped launch Print, a community newspaper in the city's East End.

Bayer revenues rise thanks to prescription drug sales

Bayer said second-quarter revenues edged up by nearly 2 percent on the strength of its prescription drug sales. But the Germany-based conglomerate revised its earnings and sales estimates for the full year because of steep declines in revenues for its pesticides and other agricultural products. Global sales were 12.2 billion euros ($14.2 billion). Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization and other costs rose to 3.1 billion euros, just beating analysts average estimates of 3 billion euros. Bayer has about 1,600 employees in the Pittsburgh region, including administrative personnel and workers at a Bayer HealthCare unit.

RMU to join Amazon Web Services' academy

Robert Morris University has become the first member of Amazon Web Services' AWS Academy program in Pennsylvania, which will allow RMU to teach students AWS Academy Cloud Computing Architecture and prepare students for certification in AWS technology. People with AWS certification earn an average salary of more than $125,000.

Federated earnings rise even as revenue falls
