SOUTH Africa will have to overcome the weight of history if they are to win at Emirates Old Trafford and level the Test series against England.

The Proteas, who are captained by former Lancashire player Faf du Plessis, trail 2-1 in the four-Test series and, while their thumping win in the second Test at Edgbaston offers hope, the fourth takes place on one of England's happier hunting grounds.

England have not lost in Manchester since 2001, while South Africa's only win in eight visits came back in 1955.

If there is any encouragement to be found, they have drawn four of their Old Trafford clashes and had the better of most of those games -including a dominant performance in 1998 on their only visit since their readmission to Test cricket following the apartheid years.

England drew with New Zealand at Old Trafford the following year and since 2000 have won eight and lost only one of 12 Test matches there. …
