St. Louis Police Major Settles Lawsuit Claiming Racial Discrimination

ST. LOUIS * A white police major who sued then-Police Chief Sam Dotson and the city in April, claiming racial discrimination, has settled the lawsuit, according to court documents.

Michael Caruso filed the suit in the U.S. District Court in St. Louis in April, claiming he was passed over for a promotion to lieutenant colonel in favor of a less-qualified African-American major based on race.

The details of the settlement, which was filed Wednesday, weren't immediately available. The Post-Dispatch has filed a public records request seeking the information, but the department has not yet responded. The city counselor's office declined to comment.

"The only thing that my client or I can say about the disposition of the Caruso lawsuit is that the matter has been resolved," Caruso's attorney Lynette Petruska said via email Monday. …
