Town Hall Chief Wants Far-Right Rallies to Be Banned

A TOWN hall chief has called for far-right demonstrations to be banned in Rochdale.

It comes after the town centre was brought to a standstill during protests by the English Defence League and Britain First on two Saturdays last month.

Council leader Richard Farnell says Home Secretary Amber Rudd should now use her powers to prevent planned rallies by the two groups, who were protesting against the 2012 grooming scandal in the town. He admits banning demonstrations is 'the last thing we want to do in a democracy' but said the 'exceptional circumstances' and the amount of disruption meant 'enough was enough'.

Coun Farnell said: "These people are not welcome here. They caused disruption to shoppers, caused public buildings to close and the tram service had to be suspended. …
