TSMC Isn't So Sure Taiwan Can Power a New Chip Fab

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the largest dedicated integrated circuit foundry in the world, said Monday that Taiwan was still its top choice for the site of its cutting-edge 3-nanometer chip fab.

But the government must facilitate the project by ensuring a stable supply of electricity, since TSMC does not plan to develop its own power source, the company said.

The statement came after Chinese-language daily Liberty Times reported that TSMC was considering other locations for its plant in light of this summer's power supply woes.

TSMC said it would announce the site of the fab in the first half of 2018 and that Taiwan was still at the top of the shortlist.

However, the company stressed that it was the government's responsibility to ensure stable electricity supply and that private enterprises should not be asked to find power on their own. …
