A 23-year-old man is dead after a confrontation with police escalated and four officers fired at him early Tuesday in Junction City.

Preliminary information indicates that Junction City Police Department officers were dispatched to conduct a welfare check about 12:45 a.m. Tuesday at a residence on the west side of Junction City. Soon after they arrived, the report of an armed disturbance a few blocks away at the Walmart Neighborhood Market, 1723 McFarland Road, was received, said Kansas Bureau of Investiation spokeswoman Melissa Underwood in a statement.

JCPD and the Geary County Sheriff's Office responded to the Walmart parking lot, where they located a man armed with two handguns on the sidewalk north of the parking lot. The man was given commands to drop the weapons. …
