Latics Crash out of Cup Thanks to Controversial Spot-Kick

OLDHAM Athletic were knocked out of the Carabao Cup first round after conceding a late penalty against Championship side Burton Albion.

The visitors had a few familiar faces in their starting line-up, with former Latics players Connor Ripley and Matt Palmer making their return to the club.

Both teams had chances in the first half, with the most notable falling to Aaron Holloway, as his header came back off the post.

It was goalless at the interval, but Burton made the breakthrough shortly into the second half when Ousmane Fane's poor attempted back pass was intercepted by Luke Varney, who rounded Ben Wilson and slotted into the empty net.

Latics responded well though and weren't behind for long, with Paul Green's long range free-kick evading everybody in the box but still managing to bounce past Ripley and into the back of the net. …
