Article excerpt

FESTUS * Police have released the name of the 17-year-old boy who was shot and killed after he and a friend found a gun in a city park.

His name was Zackary Depung.

Festus police were called to Depung's home in the 1900 block of Iditarod Trail at 6:50 p.m. Saturday. He was taken by helicopter to Barnes-Jewish Hospital, where he died at 2:55 a.m. Sunday.

Festus Police Chief Tim Lewis said Depung and a friend, 17, found the gun in a city park. They believed the gun was unloaded and were playing with it taking turns pointing it outside Depung's house.

Lewis said the victim had turned to go back into the house when his friend shot him in the upper back, close to his neck.

Police are not releasing the name of the park where the teens found the gun, nor the make and model of the gun, in an effort to evaluate whether anyone who comes forward with information about the incident or the gun is legitimate, Lewis said. …
