Mayoral Candidate Received Death Threats

Former mayoral candidate Chris Schultz said Wednesday he received death threats during the primary race.

"It was kind of traumatizing," he said, adding Topeka has ways to go to become a more accepting community.

Schultz, the city's first openly gay candidate for mayor, said he believes the threats were probably made in reaction to his sexual orientation.

The threats were sent via text message and email. Schultz said he didn't report the messages to law enforcement in an attempt to avoid thinking about them and that he didn't bring them to light until after the primary election to avoid the situation becoming a distraction.

In a Facebook post Wednesday, Schultz wrote, "You can't imagine what it feels like to see the image of someone's gun and then be told to take cover ... until it happens to you. …
