Zoo Gorilla, Tiffany, Dies Sunday

Tiffany, the Topeka Zoo's lowland gorilla, died Sunday after a decision was made not to wake her up during surgery to remove two cancerous masses from her abdominal area.

Tiffany, 49, was taken at 10:45 a.m. to a local medical facility for a CT scan when it was discovered she had two tumors resulting from stage-four ovarian cancer. She was returned to the zoo for surgery where it became clear the cancer had spread to the abdominal wall, forcing surgeons to evaluate their options.

In a news release, Topeka Zoo Director Brendan Wiley said even if the cancer could be completely removed, he "could not see an appropriate way to administer a regimen of chemotherapy to treat the cancer."

Just before 3 p.m., Tiffany died surrounded by the team that cared for her.

"She was a big part of the persona of our zoo," Wiley said. …
