3 Men Indicted on Federal Charges

A Topeka man who faces a murder charge in Shawnee County court was indicted Wednesday in federal court for unlawfully possessing a firearm following a felony conviction.

If convicted on the firearm offense, Howard Dale Burchfiel, 31, faces up to 10 years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000, U.S. Attorney Tom Beall said.

In addition to the federal case, Burchfiel was charged in Shawnee County court with first-degree murder, aggravated battery, aggravated burglary and interference with a law enforcement officer. Burchfiel is accused of carrying out a home invasion on June 18 at Pointer Apartments, 117 N.E. US-24 Highway.

The incident left Allen Wichman, 66, with life-threatening injuries which he later died from.

Burchfiel is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing on Oct. 20, according to district court records. …
