With chants of "HPC! HPC!", students at Highland Park Central unloaded dozens of boxes of sporting goods and classroom supplies donated by a group of CoreFirst Bank employees after school Thursday.

"Having corporate businesses partner with us to make up some of the things that we lack is incredibly important," said Pilar Mejia, the principal of Highland Park Central. "We could not do it without the partnerships of the businesses."

Garry Cushinberry, senior vice president of community relations, said the donation of dodge balls, footballs, basketballs, jump ropes and sidewalk chalk, to name a few items, is part of the bank's commitment to Topeka Unified School District 501 and the East Topeka community.

"Buying school supplies at this time of the year just seemed to be the thing to do," he said. …
