A high-ranking member of the Kansas House of Representatives and recent critic of Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach has taken a step toward running for Kobach's office.

Scott Schwab, an Olathe Republican and speaker pro tempore of the House, appointed a treasurer Monday in the race for secretary of state, according to campaign finance filings. That filing allows him to start raising funds in the race.

Kobach is running for governor.

Schwab, a conservative, has recently criticized Kobach for his campaign claims that there is a "culture of corruption" among elected officials in Topeka. He urged other members of the Legislative Coordinating Council -- a body that makes decisions when the Legislature is out of session -- to draft a letter to Kobach asking him to make specific accusations regarding corruption in the Legislature. …
