On a bitter-cold night last winter, St. Louisan and former Blue Cam Janssen arrived at The Wheelhouse bar and restaurant downtown to co-host a radio show. He was excited to see that many friends and family were filtering in as he hit the airwaves.

"I was like, 'Whoa, this is cool,'" Janssen said. "There were more and more people and then all of the sudden my parents (Dennis and Amy) showed up. I'm like 'You're too old to be up this late.' So we're live on the air talking about (the Cardinals') Randal Grichuk and our producer hands me a piece a paper and asks me to read it on the air. So I did, everyone starts clapping, and I finally put it all together."

"It said, 'Dear Cam Janssen, it's our pleasure to announce that you've been selected as a 2017 inductee to the St. Louis Amateur Hockey Hall of Fame," said president Scott Rupp, who founded it 11 years ago and was in attendance that night. "That's my favorite part every year, when they find out they're getting inducted by the letter."

Janssen is one of seven to be enshrined in the Class of 2017, which will be honored Saturday at the St. Louis City Center Hotel near Scottrade Center. The others are former Blue Jeff Brown, John Jost, Chris Rogles, Diana Schaefering, Larry Thatcher and Greg Gawrys, bringing the total of inductees to 71 over the last decade.

Janssen, 33, is believed to be the first born-and-bred St. Louisan to play in the NHL. A fourth-round pick of New Jersey in 2002, he spent nine years in the league, including four with the Blues from 2008-11. His career numbers included a few more penalty minutes (774) than points (14).

"If you're looking at point totals, my name and Hall of Fame don't really co-exist," Janssen said. "But I look at it like, gosh, the journey we went through and how blind we were to everything. Nowadays these kids, they know what the (Ontario Hockey League) is, Junior A and AAA because people have done it. …
